Pa. Ranjith has a reputation for crafting caste-sensitive narratives that challenge the status quo, particularly in Tamil Nadu. While his recent film, *Natchathiram Nagargiradhu*, puzzled some viewers with its complex storyline, his previous work, *Sarpatta Parambarai*, was both critically and commercially successful. He’s now returning with *Thangalaan*, a historical drama featuring Vikram and Parvathy, which tells the tale of men who were brought to the Kolar Minefields to mine gold, only to encounter supernatural hurdles.
Who was Thangalaan?
Thangalaan was a diligent father from the village of Veppur who, unlike many others, owned a piece of land. His family included his wife, Gangamma, and their four children. Thangalaan was vocal about the fact that the current landlords were not the true owners of the farmland, having seized it from the rightful owners through force many years ago. Despite owning land, Thangalaan and his fellow villagers faced discrimination. Nonetheless, the women in his community aspired to live a life of luxury, similar to the zamindar’s wives.
What stories did Thangalaan share with his children?
Thangalaan loved recounting tales of his ancestors to his children. One such story was about his great-grandfather Kadaiyaan, who was captured by a king for extracting gold from a river. Kadaiyaan claimed that the land was under the protection of Aarthi, a fearsome sorceress, and thus could not be taken by the king. Nevertheless, the king and his men tried to seize the land, but Aarthi thwarted them at every turn, transforming into snakes to attack the king’s men.
Kadaiyaan offered to defeat Aarthi in exchange for his ancestral land. After a fierce battle, Kadaiyaan captured Aarthi. However, the golden mound he sought was turned to mud by Aarthi's powers. In a final act of defiance, the Brahmins accompanying the king beheaded a statue of Lord Buddha, which they believed was the source of Aarthi's power. Enraged, Aarthi let out a scream that killed everyone except Kadaiyaan. He then slayed Aarthi by slitting her abdomen, and as her blood poured onto the field, it transformed the land into gold.
