Story and Review:
The displacement of children remains a complex issue in both national and international politics. Italian author Viola Ardone delves into this sensitive subject in The Children’s Train, a novel that examines the lives of children separated from their parents—not by force, but by their families’ willing decisions to entrust them to strangers.Set in post-World War II Naples, the story follows 7-year-old Amerigo Speranza, who lives with his mother in a city ravaged by German occupation and Allied bombings. Amid the destruction, basic necessities like food and clothing are scarce, and Amerigo has had to abandon school. In this dire context, Italy’s Communist Party presents a proposition to struggling families: send their children to wealthier households in Northern Italy to survive the harsh winter.
Amerigo embarks on this journey and is placed with a single woman affiliated with the Communist Party. In his new environment, he experiences an entirely different life—one filled with schooling, violin lessons, and an abundance of food. Though his circumstances improve dramatically, the arrangement is temporary, and the children of Southern Italy, or the “Mezzogiorno,” are expected to return to their families. This sets up the novel’s most poignant conflict: Amerigo’s struggle with returning to his impoverished home after glimpsing a brighter, more hopeful world. His mother and community, however, remain anchored in the harsh realities of their lives.
The narrative gains depth as it shifts to Amerigo’s adulthood, where the full impact of his childhood experience unfolds. Ardone skillfully portrays adult Amerigo, grappling with the cost of his opportunity to leave Naples. Did it truly improve his life, or did it alienate him from his mother, his community, and ultimately himself?
Beautifully translated by Clarissa Botsford, The Children’s Train explores the painful choices faced by those living in poverty, offering no easy answers and eschewing clear-cut heroes or villains. This deeply human story will resonate with fans of Elena Ferrante, yet it stands alone as a vivid reimagining of a unique and challenging social experiment.
