Story and Review:
The contributions of Black women to history are often overlooked, so it’s always uplifting when a filmmaker strives to highlight their stories. Theodore Melfi did this with "Hidden Figures" (2016), dramatizing the pivotal role three Black female mathematicians played in NASA's 1960s space program. Similarly, writer-director Tyler Perry (best known for "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and the Madea series) tackles a true story that’s equally inspiring, though perhaps less glamorous: the clearing of an immense backlog of World War II mail to and from U.S. troops in Europe by a battalion of dedicated Black women from the Women’s Army Corps, who faced widespread institutional racism and sexism.
Unfortunately, Perry's approach drenches the tale with his signature syrupy style, resulting in a rather lackluster and sluggish film. While Kerry Washington delivers a powerful performance as Major Charity Adams, the no-nonsense commander of the 6888th battalion, other crucial scenes falter due to the amateurish performances of some of the supporting cast.
